Living with candlelight
Here are some tips for you to get the most from your candles.
- Always store your candles in a cool, dark and dry place. Tapers or dinner candles should be stored flat to prevent warping.
- Remove dust and fingerprints by gently rubbing the surface with a piece of nylon or a soft cloth. The cloth can be dry or slightly dampened with water.
- Wax drippings can be removed from candleholders by running hot water over them.
- Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass votive. It might crack or weaken the glass which might break upon subsequent use.
- Avoid burning candles in any glass item not specifically designed for candles.
- Trim wick ¼ inch each time candle is lit. This allows the candle to burn until the pool of melted wax reaches the candle’s full diameter which gives you a longer burn and prevent the candle from smoking.
- Votive containers are easier to clean after use if a few drops of water is added into the glass before inserting the votive candles. Do not add more than a few drops of water (a teaspoon is a good measure to use) and do not add water unless you intend to burn the candles immediately afterwards. Over time, the wick could absorb the water and will not burn properly.
- To prevent candles from boring a hole in the middle, burn candles for at least one hour for each inch in diameter. Example: burn a 3 inch diameter candle for at least 3 hours.
- Breaking in a candle. The first time you light a candle, allow it to burn until the liquid wax covers the entire top of the candle. This process ensures that the candle will perform better and burn more evenly thoughout it’s lifetime.
- Use a candle snuffer each time you entinguish the flame. This prevents the wax from spraying over your tabletop.
- To sample a scented candle, breathe the fragrance from the bottom of the candle. Undisturbed by the circulating air, the aroma will be the most concentrated at these areas.
- Never burn a candle completely. Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains.
Fire Safety and Candles
All candles are a fire hazard if not used properly. Here are some guidelines to help you burn candles safely.
Before lighting
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before burning.
- Always use a candleholder designed for the candle’s use. (Heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drip or melted wax)
- Burn candles in a well ventilated room.
- Place the candleholder on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
- Avoid drafts, vents or air currents.
- Follow manufacturer’s recommendations on burn time and proper use.
While burning
- Never touch or move a burning candle.
- Do not burn a candle all the way down (for safety, discontinue use when 2 inch of wax remains).
- Extinguish candles if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly.
- Always keep the candle within your sight.
When extinguishing
- Use a candle snuffer.
- Never use water to extinguish a candle.
- Make sure that the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing.
- Do not touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
